I Miss the Old Days

Good Vibrations: On this day 16 May in 1966, The Beach Boys released the album Pet Sounds. The album is now regarded as the masterpiece of composer-producer Brian Wilson, and is often hailed as one of the best and most influential albums in pop music.

Possibly apocryphal, but it's said that when Paul McCartney heard Good Vibrations, he told his band mates they were really going to have to bring their A game on their next release. The result? Sargent Pepper.

Or was that Sargent Shriver? It was PET SOUNDS that McCartney was responding to, apparently.

McCartney has repeated this from time to time, as apparently the most band-competitive of the Beatles. The Byrds were another Californian spur, as were Dylan and most of the more adventurous UK bands.
