Clayton Matthews ("Matt") was my cousin. His wife was Patricia Matthews, once called the Queen of Historical Romances. They're both gone now, but enjoyed a long career in paperbacks. Thanks for sharing the cover. It's one I don't have of his.
They both had extensive publications. And wasn't Clayton the guy who once sued his dentist for keeping him waiting? I can't remember that whole story, but I associate his name with it.
Could have been, but I don't recall the story either. I met them several times at family reunions, and we corresponded quite a bit. They wrote a few short stories for our magazines back in the day. Nice people, but my uncles used to tell some stories on him. Guess he was quite a rounder when he was young. He didn't get along with Mike Avallone, I don't believe, though I did.
Yeah, I liked Mike, but he was a real character. But he certainly stood out in a crowd of people. He just seemed to radiate, and knew when someone was either talking about him or looking his way. I always got a kick out of his prose, too. Who else but Michael Avallone would write, "The footsteps walked up to the door and knocked!"? He could certainly churn out the novels, though. Dang, at one time he would have three or four paperbacks on the rack at the same time. LOL

Avallone was an interesting guy in his own right.
