Did Roger Ebert ever matter? Look, I enjoyed reading him as much as the next guy...but this sainthood thing has got to stop. He popularized that whole "thumbs up-thumbs down" approach to film criticism, something I've never been comfortable with...it smacks of Christians being thrown to the lions. No, as far as film critics go, Ebert was just another polar bear in the zoo.
He was correct (agreed with me) about some movies and wrong about others (didn't agree with me), but I like John Simon as a critic better, if only because of Simon's greater contrariness 8-)
