Songs of the Day

The Soundtrack of Summer 1963

This was the summer after my college graduation.  I worked at the Red Arrow freight line in Mexia, Texas, until the end of August and then moved to Corsicana, Texas, to teach 11th grade English.  An experience I'll never forget, and I'll bet some of the students won't, either, though they might wish they could.

It was the summer after my high school graduation, I was headed to the U.S. Army before I went to college, and I had the radio on a lot. I remember a lot of Beatles and Stones at the time, the British Invasion was under way.

Well, Rick, the Invasion hadn't Quite hit the beaches yet...the Stones, for example, had only one record out, the UK single of "Come On," in the summer of '63. The Liverpudlians had more vinyl out, but not too much in the States. VeeJay didn't get their first US album out till '64, for example...

Now that is my youth. I finished my sophomore year of high school and we spent the summer in a bungalow colony in Mount Freedom (near Morristown), New Jersey.

Rick, you're thinking of the summer of 1964. The first Beatles song to really hit here wasn't until Christmas of 1963.

The summer of 63 I was not yet two. I'm told I was moved back and forth from home to doctor office. When I was not doing that I am told I spent most of my time making goofy faces.

I do most of this now too.
