Jason Diamond is so full of [redacted] in his opening paragraph, it's no wonder A) he has no idea that Jonathan Lethem began his career primarily as a sf and fantasy writer and B) that fantasy and science fiction are not identical, and that fantasy is pretty common, sf not at all uncommon among writers not usually labeled speculative fiction writers...and that ORLANDO is an excellent fantasy, not science fiction, and it's not really picking nits to state this baldly.
Finding sf in Brautigan is about as tough as finding the sf in Vonnegut's work.
