The Japanese refer to it as "soft roe." In one memorable episode of the original Iron Chef, one of the participants used Cod soft roe to produce an ice cream. In the Iron Chef Usenet newsgroup that I subscribed to this became known almost immediately as "cod spooge ice cream." And no, it apparently didn't taste very good although other preparations using the soft roe were quite well regarded.
