There's an interesting recent book, "Twain's Feast: Searching for America's Lost Foods in the Footsteps of Samuel Clemens" by Andrew Beahrs, that also takes Twain's list as a starting point and surveys the state of American food by going in search of items on his list.
It borders on being a little too San Francisco foodie for me, but I did like the book, and commend it to the attention of both Twain fans and food fans.

Lots of stuff I shouldn't eat, health-wise, but hardly any that I wouldn't want to!
