It does like a sign of the end-times but, to be fair, there can be good reasons for citing a tweet. I would say that twitter is fertile ground if you are studying popular culture and want to track trends, attitudes, etc. Quite a few authors are now on twitter and I can see a student or professor needing to cite an author's tweets if they give information about their work. Also, back during the 2009 swine flue scare, CDC used twitter to track occurrences and I can see needing to cite tweets if studying the efficacy of using twitter to track epidemics.
I've got twenty years to go for retirement. Pity me. Since celebrities (and even the president) are now making important announcements on Twitter, I suppose there's a use for this, but really, I would try to get students to look at real sources.
