I didn't even know there was a ROAD HOUSE sequel. By coincidence, I was talking about it last week in Arizona, where we saw a pickup like the one Ben Gazzara drove with the huge wheels. I was speculating as to how the guy got into it without a ladder.
Arguably, Anthony Hopkins was the "star" of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, not Foster. The stinkeroo factor of HANNIBAL had nothing to do with Foster's absence, and HANNIBAL RISING without Hopkins was even worse. There was a JOSEY WALES sequel without Clint Eastwood, and a CARLITO'S WAY sequel without Pacino. CRYSTAL SKULL proved that you could bring back the original star and still produce a rancid turkey.
Going further back into prehistory, THE PINK PANTHER and A SHOT IN THE DARK were followed by INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU with Alan Arkin in the title role, Sellers returned to the role a few years later in three other sequels, and then after he died, there were two ill-advised attempts to keep the series going with Ted Wass as a Clouseau-like cop and Roberto Benigni as Clouseau's son.
