I Don't Watch the Soaps, but This Still Makes Me Sad

ABC cancels 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live,' replaces soaps with lifestyle shows: "The Chew will be produced by Gordon Elliot (Paula Deen’s Home Cooking) and is a one-hour series that enables viewers to “get the dish” on anything and everything related to the world of food and beyond. Hosts will include Mario Batali (Iron Chef America); entertaining expert Clinton Kelly (What Not to Wear); Carla Hall (Top Chef); Michael Symon (Iron Chef America), and nutrition expert Daphne Oz."

People don't realize how big of a blow this is. I guess people are fed up with storytelling?

Hard to believe. Do they really want to watch THE CHEW? Egad.

Bill, the soaps have been dying for years as the demographics changed but this is all about money. I guarantee The Chew costs about a buck and a quaarter to produce, it fills up the same amount of airtime and if no one watches, who really cares?

Not ABC, obviously.

Meanwhile, expect SoapNet and Lifetime to expand their slates of original programming in the afternoons.

I haven't watched soaps in years, but I can't imagine daytime with ALL MY CHILDREN. It just ain't right.

SOAPNET is going to cease in 2012 anyway since Disney is going to make it a channnel aimed at the pre-school set. So one show is going to be about cooking followed by another about losing weight.
