In 1959 fourteen year-old Steven Truscott was arrested for the rape and murder of twelve year-old Lynn Harper in Clinton, Ontario. Convicted of the murder he was sentenced to death. The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment in 1960. Truscott claimed throughout his trial that he was innocent. In 1967 he appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada for a new trial. The Court rejected the appeal. He was paroled in 1969 and in 1974 released from the terms of his parole. In August 2007, 48 years after he was convicted of murder and following new forensic evidence (at least partially related to forensic entymology - bugs - which cast doubts on the timeline that the prosecution put forward), the Court of Appeals for Ontario overturned the original conviction and, while refusing to declare Truscott to be innocent did overturn the 1959 conviction.

Malcolm Shabazz, Malcolm X's grandson, was 12 when he set the fire that killed his grandmother.
