The good news is that I don't think this has a chance to get off the ground, because I don't think there are more than 100 people living who know the name of Wallis Simpson. And all of them read this blog.

The publicity is seriously incomplete. King Edward VII of England fell for her. She was an American socialite twice divorced. His intent to marry her caused a constitutional crisis in England. He abdicated, becoming the Duke of Windsor, and married her. His brother became King, and his niece is Queen Elizabeth.
A better story would be what happened in the forty years after Edward abdicated the throne to marry "the woman he loved." She henpecked him mercilessly whilst he sunk into apathy and alcohol. They were both expert at getting others to pick up the check and ended up traveling from one nouveau riche friend's villa to the next, letting their beloved black pugs (who were fed only filet mignon)have the run of the place and crap wherever they pleased. Good times.
Somehow I suspect Madonna would much rather make the glossy love story leading up to the abdication than focus on the long, slow, terrible decline afterwards. But I think that would make a much more engrossing film or play.
You nailed it, Deb. The part of Edward should be played by Moochie.
