Since the children's writers are all adults, they probably felt they should choose books they read when they were children (although one writer broke that rule for one book). As much as I love the Harry Potter books, it was with an adult's outlook and life experiences.
My top five favorite children's books (only including those I read as a child):
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle.
The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster.
Eight Cousins by Louisa May Alcott.
The Gammage Cup by Carol Kendall.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett .
(runners up: Treasure Island, Captain's Courageous, Little Men, The Five Story Mistake, Harriet the Spy)
