Pennsylvania Leads the Way

Some Harrisburg schools closing early because of heat - PennLive.com: "Harrisburg's SciTech High in Harrisburg will dismiss at 10 a.m. today and William Penn ACTS and Career and Technology Academy at 11:30 a.m., due to unseasonable heat, according to Harrisburg School District spokeswoman Lisa Paige.

Temperatures in the Harrisburg area are forecast to be near record highs, topping 90 today and in the upper 80s tomorrow."

And your point, Bill? I assume, or at least hope, your schools down in the Swelter Zone are air-conditioned. Guess what about schools in the likes of Harrisburg?

I went to school in the days before a/c. In fact, the first two years after I graduated from college, I taught in a school w/o a/c. And it was a lot hotter than that. In the winter, of course, I walked to school barefoot in the snow. Uphill.

I'm from Philly, and we went to school despite high temps and 100% humidity. Of course, we also walked 5 miles in the snow...

Yeah, yeah. And I went to school w/o a/c in Oklahoma, Connecticut, and some buildings in Hawaii. (Massachusetts and New Hampshire and other buildings in Hawaii had often inadequate a/c.) And I had to swim to school with the sharks, scraping my fists up pretty raw on their snouts. (And then there was Hawaii.)

If you're crazy enough to live in southern Texas, you're used to 90 degrees (Celsius) in the shade. In Harrisburg, PA, not so much. I know that conditions in a 90 degree building are not too conducive to tuition, perhaps even with a Crider in the tank suffering along with the charges.

Believe me, we all suffered, and not just from the heat. I've often wondered how my young charges (and I) survived those years.

I have a feeling this is all some sort of socialist plot to make American students more stupid (not that they would need any help).
