Phil Carey, R. I. P.

Soap actor Phil Carey dies at age 83 in NYC - Yahoo! News: "NEW YORK – Phil Carey, best known for his role as business tycoon Asa Buchanan in the ABC soap opera 'One Life to Live,' has died. He was 83.

Carey died at his New York City home Friday following a battle with lung cancer, according to ABC network officials."

To me, he'll always be Captain Parmalee.  For much better coverage, go to Thrilling Days of Yesteryear.

Didn't he also play Philip Marlowe?

Cap'n Bob, as I recall, he was a very good Marlowe. Of all the screen Marlowes, I thought he and James Garner were closest in appearance and style to Chandler's conception.

Carey also did a guest-star turn as Archie Bunker's macho buddy Steve in an episode of ALL IN THE FAMILY in which Archie rails against homosexuals. "They ain't real men like Steve here," Archie blusters. There's a pause, and Carey says with perfect timing, "Archie, there's something I never told you or the other guys ... I'm gay."
