As usual, a few publishers control the list: Farrar Straus, HarperCollins, Viking, Random, etc. The Literary Establishment triumphs once again. All those Master of Fine Arts people write for one another. Contrast this with the 2008 best-list of Jonathan Yardley of the Washington Post, perhaps the most discerning reviewer in the country, who prefaces his list with the announcement that he has all but given up on literary fiction.
