Fans to mark anniversary of John Lennon's death at Strawberry Fields in Central Park: "It was 28 years ago today that singer/songwriter John Lennon was fatally shot outside his Upper West Side apartment building by a deranged fan.
Every year since the tragic event on Dec. 8, 1980, fans have gathered to pay tribute to the gifted musician near the site of the shooting.
Despite the bitter temperatures, hundreds of people are expected to gather later today at Strawberry Fields - the memorial garden in Central Park that was created as a tribute to the ex-Beatle in 1985."

For whateer reason, that death hit me harder than most others (since 1968). Maybe it was because Lennon lived in New York and was relatively accessible.
I still remember that day - they broke into Monday Night Football (which I was still watching at that time) with the announcement.

I remember my third grade teacher telling us what happened the next morning.
A friend of mine, about the same age (8) misheard the news and ran to his father, bawling. "Dad!" he cried. "Somebody shot Jack Lemmon!"
Not being in third grade, I was watching MNF, too, Jeff. Howard Cosell got very teary as I recall.
This really hurt me, too. John was something of an idol of mine. When I was in a garage band in 1965 I sang his parts when we did Beatle songs. At least I tried. If I'd been better I might not have been kicked out.
Too bad his killer didn't get the flame stool.
