"William Scarff" is one of Budrys's pseudonyms...the painting he wrote that story around, for FANTASTIC UNIVERSE, also inspired WHO?, as Bill is good enough to demonstrate.
Ah! For some reason, I was thinking the short form of "Who?" was in F&SF. "Rogue Moon" was, an that's what I'm thinking of, probably. Odd that the Scarff story gets the big line.
I wonder where "Scarff" came from..."John A. Sentry" was a re-arranged translation of his name, Algirdas Jonas Budrys, from Lithuanian into English...
