Christmas Morning

It's Christmas morning, and all through the house, not a creature is stirring except for me an a couple of the cats. So, feeling nostalgic about Christmases past, I started to look through an album of old family photos and ran across this one. It's probably not from but it was certainly wintertime. That's me on the right, but I didn't make the snowman. My parents did. I helped, though. I remember that snowman well, and I thought the pipe was an excellent touch. The snowman's pretty small, but I was highly impressed by it. I still am. I don't think I've ever seen a better one in all the years since.

As you can see, there aren't any other houses around. For the first five years or so of my life, we lived a mile or so outside of town. We had chickens, and I loved to look for their eggs. We had a milk cow, and although it's been a long time, I think I could still walk right outside and milk a cow if I had to. I doubt that I'll ever help build another snowman, though.

The hat tilted at just the right rakish angle is a nice touch also.

I, too remember how to milk cows. Don't try bulls though, Bill. Happy holidays!

That's a great picture. When I was a kid, we had chickens and a cow in our back yard even though we lived in town. I gathered many an egg, but I never got the hang of milking.

I probably just imagine that I did, James.

Us city folk always got our milk from a bottle (and later a carton or plastic jug). Eggs were easy to find. They were inm the carton.

Very impressive snowman, Bill. You look very pleased with yourself.

I never milked a cow, but I do remember taking our empty glass bottles to the dairy to exchange them for full ones. And that was only 30 years ago or so.

I'm glad it's not snowing today, as my sons both got skateboards and my daughter got a scooter. It's nice enough that they can go outside and play, which is good for me come naptime.

After we moved to town, we had our milk delivered by a Mr. Metzger, who had a small dairy. He drove an old red truck.

The telling part of that photo is the shovel, I'd say. Thanks for sharing.

That is a great picture. We seldom had enough snow to build a snowman when I was young. I do remember one snow where we built a six foot snowman and a igloo big enough to climb into. Great times.

I never cared for gathering eggs or milking cows. Some of my grandmother's chickens were down right vicious. I did think it was cool that I knew how to drive a tractor at age 8, however.

Bill: Looks like a scene right out of CHRISTMAS STORY. Joe

I do look like I was dressed by Ralphie's mom.
