Happy Birthday, Bob Feller!

One of the greats, sure enough. Age 89 today.

I've always loved that name.

Saw Bob at Winter Haven last March. He signs before Indian games for five bucks a shot. My frined had a old penny arcade card and Bob looked at it and told him that the photo had been taken in 1939. He dresses in a Cleveland uniform and throws a few before the game.

A friend of mine wrote a book about the 1948 Indians titled The Forgotten Tribe. Some years gao during spring training one of the other '48 Indians took him to some restaurant where Feller was and they set around talking for about an hour. When my friend got up to leave, he asked Feller for an autograph. Feller told him to f-off as he had been "boring me all night." My friend was shocked because until that point the conversation had been going well.

Based on what I've heard and read, Feller can be the nicest guy one minute and arrogant and abusive the next.

Not being an autograph buff, I never stood in line the two times I've been in Winter Haven. The word around there is that's he fine with the long line of fans because he's getting paid to be nice.

Too bad. I wish they could all be nice guys, like, say writers.
