Aside from Connery being just about the best actor imaginable for Bond as written in those early films, it's also notable what a remarkable screwup he is in most of what he attempts in those. Is it any wonder he was so beloved...
I hasten to clarify, what a screwup Bond is. Connery's major error at about that time, certainly from my mother's point of view and I can certainly agree, was a rather insane offhanded remark about roughing up women when it's called for, or something very much like that.

I've known at least two women who've never forgiven him for that, and who can blame them?
Number it in the hundreds. Was it on Sixty Minutes? Maybe thousands then.
I figure that comment must have outraged a lot of people. Connery's never really lived it down. Not that he's tried too hard.
A friend of mine posted the roles that Connery turned down.
I wish he'd taken The Sound of Music.
