Who Wants to Carry around a Pocket Full of These?
Presidential $1 Coin: "The United States is honoring our Nation’s presidents by issuing $1 circulating coins featuring their images in the order that they served, beginning with Presidents Washington, Adams, Jefferson and Madison in 2007. The United States Mint will mint and issue four Presidential $1 Coins per year, and each will have a reverse design featuring a striking rendition of the Statue of Liberty. These coins will feature larger, more dramatic artwork, as well as edge-incused inscriptions of the year of minting or issuance, 'E Pluribus Unum,' 'In God We Trust' and the mint mark. Although the size, weight and metal composition of the new Presidential $1 Coin will be identical to that of the Sacagawea Golden Dollar, there are several unique features that make this coin distinctive."

I saw this yesterday and wondered the same thing. If they really wanted to make these things circulate they're going to have to remove all the paper ones from circulation. That's sure to go over big with the American public.
I have five or six dollar bills in my wallet right now. I can't imagine having five or six of those coins in my pocket.
_Thankfully, Canada has a 'Toonie' ($2) coin to go with the 'Loonie' ($1). Although both were long time paper bills before.
_Otherwise, the heavy bulkiness of single dollar coins would be even more cumbersome. Though, I would prefer for the $2 paper bill to return.
As Classic stated Canadians do it all the time. There was resistance at first but people came around. And he's right if you are going to make a real effort to get a circulating dollar coin you must eliminate the paper bills. the driving force in Canada for getting rid of the $1 and $2 bills was the vending industry and rapid transit - coins are easier for them to deal with than paper money.
I wouldn't be surprised if the vending industry didn't have a hand in this. Not that industries like that ever influence things in this country.
General Washington, meet Susan B. Anthony. Hark! Here comes Sacajewea, too.
I don't think the gov. has the gumption to take the dollar bill out of circulation.
Not that I care. I always carry hundreds.
