New York Daily News - Home - The 100 Greatest Love Songs: "Some may find them smug, or sappy, or overplayed. But the songs here have probably made more lovers misty than any music in memory. So how did we go about compiling this list of all-time hand-holding odes? Eligible songs had to have endured at least a decade in the public consciousness, if not two or three. And they had to have been popular enough to have ranked among the top 20 pop songs in whatever year they were released.
These aren't necessarily the sexiest songs. If they had been, you'd see cuts by James Brown and Prince. But they are all classic serenades to a love achieved, the kind of songs meant to make listeners swoon."

Oh God there are some wretched songs on that list. I'm as big a fan of The Beatles as anyone, but "The Long and Winding Road"? "P.S. I Love You"?
And Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" is a love song?
I'm sorry but Unchained Melody need to be a lot higher on the list.
I know a lot of girls who lost their virginity to that song.
Whew! For a second there I thought they'd left out Barry White.
Intersting... half a dozen of those songs are not love songs.
Oh - and somebody really likes RUBBER SOUL. Three of the songs on the list were from that one album.
At least they got "Happy Together". I would add "Day After Day" by Badfinger and "The Air That I Breath" by the Hollies.
Those might be too good for the list, Graham.
Agreed, some aren't remotely love songs. I'd put "For All We Know," by the Carpenters on there and dump the one they used. Since most of these lists seem to be produced by runny-nosed punks I suppose we should be glad they have oldies in there. But look how low "Crazy" is. Pfui!
Strangers in the Night? C'mon now. And Last Dance by Donna Summer is a classic serenade?
No Elton John, no James Taylor? At least there's no Michael Bolton...
