No More Serenity

IGN: Serenity Sequel Squashed: "October 5, 2006 - In spite of a groundswell of grassroots support amongst its fans, Serenity has failed to revive the science fiction-western Firefly franchise. Even with DVD sales, the movie reportedly failed to recoup its $40 million budget. And as anyone who's seen the film knows, the exit of certain characters and the resolution of key storylines makes it difficult — or impossible — to recapture the chemistry of the excellent-but-short-lived series."

I liked the movie a lot, so I'm sorry to hear this.

I echo your regrets, Bill.

Damn.

Of course, I figured after the resolution of Serenity and the wrap up of the show's central mystery that Wheedon was saying goodbye to the show anyway.

Yeah, but I was hoping he'd find a way to carry it on.

Any studio that releases a movie in September has no intention of it succeeding. Buncha dirty, stinkin' poop-heads is what they are.

And of course the movie's made back its $40 million. This is Hollywood accounting: The official domestic gross was $25,514,517, and the overseas gross was $13,337,435. That's almost $39 million. No way did DVD sales and rentals (not to mention broadcast rights, and the boost the movie gave to the TV series DVD sales) bring in less than $1 million.

I liked it, but the three friends I saw it with didn't. They found the movie kind of confusing.

None of them had seen the Firefly series, which is probably a key problem for that film. Too many characters, too much backstory that regular moviegoers didn't see.
