This might make me a minority of 1 (my wife, for example, strongly disagrees with me), but I've always found the Tom Bombadil interlude in LOTR to be a distraction. Leaving him out of the movie version was not something I grieved about.
I don't think they needed Tom Bombadil in the movie. It was long enough as it was. I didn't have a problem with him in the book, though.
I'm surprise the list did not include Quincy Morris from Dracula. Poor Quincy, he dies defeating Dracula and is paid back by not appearing in any of he films. Or even this list.

It's TV and not the movies, but I've seen an adaptation of "Huckleberry Finn" which didn't have Jim in the cast.
