Harlan Ellison has written about his Hysrox partisanship, at greatest length in the columns collected in AN EDGE IN MY VOICE...and the wafters are not only more chocolate but also more cakelike than the candied Oreo wafers, the filling a bit better. Which didn't stop my usual market from dropping Hydrox. But I half-wonder if the market's going kaput.
Also notable that they didn't mention Hydrox's brief reintroduction as Famous Amos sandwitch cookies, along with a vanilla sidekick.
Growing up, our next door neighbor, Harley Bates, worked for Sunshine Biscuit Company, and my Mom bought that brand. We also got freebies from the neighbor, of both the usual products and new things they were trying out, pre-introduction. I don't remember much about that, but I do know I liked the Hydrox cookies a lot, and was sorry to see them gone when Nabisco pushed Sunshine off the market shelves.

When we were kids my mother bought Hydrox rather than Oreos, but I couldn't tell you why.

Hydrox was cheaper, as I recall. If I ate either one it wouldn't be Oreo.
Sunshine's other big sandwich cookie was the Vienna Fingers. Frankly, any company could do well with those two products.
