It seemed a marketing idea gone wrong. The newspapers all had many articles and the mistake was, it seemed, NOT GIVING consumers a choice in simply giving a new, very different formula. They next had two choices with Coke Classic on the shelves again, and for a long time after it was Classic and then the classic not labeled as such many, many months later!
