Wikipedia says Jessup wrote it as his reaction/response to the movie version of The Hustler. Whatever, it's a very good book, and the McQueen movie (directed by Norman Jewison after Peckinpaugh bailed out on the project) is also quite good. Hard to miss the similarities, though.
A homage, perhaps. I read the book in hardback and really liked it. Liked the movie, too. Probably have done an Overlooked Movies post on it in the past.

I enjoyed reading all of Richard Jessup's novels.
