The key benefit to me (other than the infinite entertainment value and expanded intellectual horizons) is empathy. Those who have read some of my soapbox rants on George's blog will be surprised to see me claim empathy, but--much as I tell my girls how much worse a person I'd be if I didn't go to church regularly--I'd have even less empathy if I didn't read so much.
I suspect the causation here goes both ways--people with higher incomes tend to read more, which may cause their incomes to rise a little, which causes them to read more...

So that's why I have so much empathy. Maybe I need to read less.
I can't imagine the type of person who would voluntarily stop reading!
