One of the very best "toys" of my childhood; I must have used it, and pieces of it, for 10-12 years. It was excellent for encouraging imagination and creativity, as well as basic tool-using and understanding the fundamentals of engineering and construction. (Part of me wishes I still had it today, probably 55 years later.) Do Erector sets still exist? I don't think so...
Like Don, I had a basic set and couldn't make anything worthwhile from it. But Gilbert was a very progressive and generous employer and treated his workers well.

I loved my Erector set, but never had enough to build anything truly awesome.
