My personal typewriter for a long time was a Royal portable. At work, I had an IBM Selectric II before the PC era dawned. Anyone else remember plug-in cartridges to increase the number of available fonts?
I remember walking 2 miles to my high school in the summer (no snow or uphill :) with friends in 1966 to take a summer school class on typing. Had to learn it for our future, they told us. I attained a blistering 25wpm after the class, but never used the skill much until the computer age, having my college papers typed by fellow students for a few bucks who did it for spending money. I average(d) 60wpm for my adult life, but still eschew the phone apps and carry a pocket notepad to make lists. I still write "ribbons" on the shopping list in that notepad when I need new printer cartridges.

I had three or four type balls in a desk drawer for my Selectric at the college.

My speed on a phone screen is about one wpm.
