Mine was a little later than that...a really cool blue 3-speed--which was stolen from our garage less than6 months after I got it. I have always suspected who the thief was, but I had no proof. Wish I could have called Sheriff Dan Rhodes.
I had a banana-seat item, manufacturer unknown, and then a PennSpeed from Penney's. To say nothing of the tricycle before that. Never have owned a biking helmet, but with Paul Williams and also a schoolmate of mine in mind, will get one if I finally get the bike I inherited by default from my ex's bother fixed. (Did once get the front tire suddenly stuck in a trolley-track while commuting to work in Philadelphia, and went flying over the bars and into the street just in front of a cab...several bystanders assuring me I was a fool for not claiming the cab hit me.)
Todd, I didn't know that had ever happened to anyone other than me. Except in my case it was a railroad track. I flew over the handlebars and landed hard on various parts of my both. My hand was sprained and took quite a while to come around.

The sheriff would've cracked the case.
I had a Mercury. No one wanted to steal it.
