Fascinating. I may have to re-read some historical novels to see how badly they mangled things.
My full field equipment ran about 50 pounds. In basic training we had to march waaaay out to a bivouac location in the boonies with all that gear. I got lucky and pulled KP that day and we KPs got to ride out in a truck.
