My grandmother used to say to pull the covers down and air out the bed while one ate breakfast and took a shower. After thirty minutes or so had passed one should then go make the bed. I don't remember her saying anything about dust mites and such. The way I remember it, she thought one should do it her way for the bed to stay fresher longer.

I never do. Jackie does, but I convinced her to wait a while now.
