I'm not sure he intended this one in the way we might read it today: “There are many harsh lessons to be learned from the gambling experience, but the harshest one of all is the difference between having Fun and being Smart.”
And I do not believe this is true (and I'm sure the Buddha would agree with me): “For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled.”
Years ago I was to meet Hunter at his favorite haunt in Woody Creek. He was incoherent on the phone and never showed. I was greatly disappointed as I am a big admirer of his writing style.

But did you and the Buddha have as much fun as Hunter S. Thompson?
I've had a lot of fun; I can't speak for the Buddha.
I suspect no matter how much "fun" Thompson had, he rarely remembered it.

W. L. Ripley
The first book I ever read by him was the one about the Hell's Angels. I read a lot of his stuff in Rolling Stone after that.
