I can make this change if I *make* myself do it, but I learned on an old Underwood manual machine. Then I used an Olympia manual for several years before switching to an IBM Selectric II for quite a few more years (and then I used both typewriter and computer for a good 15 years before going complete typewriter-less about 3 years ago). The double-space-after-a-period is, as Deb said, ingrained muscle memory and unavoidable except by paying more attention than I usually want to pay.

I always put two spaces after the period. It's the way I learned to type back in 9th grade and my muscle memory is too old to change now.
Ditto. And anyone who doesn't can just keep off my lawn.

I also use two spaces. If required by a publisher to leave only one space, I just do a "search and replace" after I finish the manuscript.

I double spaced for years but changed to single somewhere in the nineties. I also had one of those iron gray IBM typewriters, Bill.
I had one of those IBMs too. Heavy mother.
