I strongly recommend SHADE OF THE RAINTREE by Larry Lockridge. It's a biography of Ross Lockridge written by his son. Ross Lockridge labored for years over RAINTREE COUNTY and thought he was writing an American ULYSSES. Instead it was labelled sort of GONE WITH THE WIND lite and turned into a big technicolor soap opera. Lockridge suffered from severe depression, not helped by the dismissive reception given his book and, sadly, he eventually committed suicide.
I saw the movie back in the long ago, but I remember little about it. I never read the book. I think the old U.S. Dell paperback was abridged, but I'm not sure of that. I knew that Lockridge had committed suicide, but I wasn't aware of the biography.
It was during the shooting that Montgomery Clift went out and had the automobile accident that "shattered" his face. Some people can identify the scenes which were shot before and after the accident.

I saw the movie when I was young and thought it was tedious as hell.
I don't remember thinking that, but maybe I was too busy swooning over Elizabeth Taylor to notice how boring the movie was.
