I Miss the Old Days

My grandmother always had irises in her yard, and there were a few around our house when I was a kid, too.  They always remind me of this time of year and of my grandmother's yard.  Many years ago someone gave me and Judy some bulbs that I planted in a front bed.  Now and then they even produce a couple of flowers.  That's all, just one or two.  Sometimes nothing at all.  Maybe the winters have to get cold for the bulbs to put out growth.  Anyway, this year I had a couple of blooms.  If I had my grandmother's green thumb, maybe I'd have a lot more.

My grandmother had a beautiful garden that, among other things, had beds of Iris. She had many flowers each year.

After she and my grandfather passed years ago my parents went and sold the house despite the fact they knew that my grandparents wanted us to have the house. While they had told one and all what they wanted they had not updated their wills.

The new owners proceeded to rip out ALL of the landscaping as well as slapping a garish second floor on the house and then painting the whole thing green with large white polka dots.

Sandi and I made the mistake of driving by one day while this was going on and saw my grandmother's her prize winning rose bushes dumped at the curb with the iris scattered on top. Just sickening.

My grandmother's house is gone, too, along with all her flowers. I don't know if I even have a picture of the entire house, but I do have some of the yard.

My mother's hydrangeas still bloom every year in our front yard.

When it’s spring in Arkansas you can always tell the old house places by the irises. The people, houses, barns, etc., may have been long gone a hundred years ago, but the women’s irises are still blooming.

We've been living on our place several years, we had a bunch of white Irises bloom this year for the first time. Anybody else ever hear them called "flags"?

That's what we called them when I was a kid.

We have a lot of the traditional bearded Iris we planted a couple years ago, they are up but it's too early for flower stalks, that will be May. We also have some of the Iris you show, but again, it's too early for them here. Iris, Hydrangeas, Forsythia, Honeysuckle - all traditional "old fashioned" shrubs and flowers that aren't planted so much these days, but are wonderful. Yes, we have them all.

You're grandmother is one of those gardeners I would have loved to had a long talk with.
