None. Never even heard of any of them.

Three: THE HAUNTING, SUSPIRIA, and JACOB'S LADDER.

Two--The Haunting and Suspiria--and I'm completely uninterested in seeing any of the others.

I remember seeing Monkey Shines because it was the summer and we had just come back from England. I hadn't read any reviews for weeks but there was something playing we wanted to see and this one was playing with it. We didn't like it much as I remember, vaguely. When I get home I'll look up what the other movie was.

1. The Orphanage (2007
Pretty dire. I quit watching rather early on, so can't really say if it would've improved.

2. Suspiria (1977)
Vastly, hugely overrated, say I. Huge cult following. A bit like calling THE FRENCH CONNECTION underrated...except I like that one.

3. Cube (1997)
Rather good surreal sf. *Nothing* at all like the SAW films except that people are trapped in a death-dealing environment.

4. The Haunting (1963)
Underrated by whom? This one has one of the most deserved excellent reputations in horror film, despite a few rough edges. The remake is difficult to underrate, despite the cast and nothing at all else.

5. Jacob’s Ladder (1990)
Another good cast set adrift in an inane script; also loses points for a glycerin-mouthed M. Culkin as the child-molestor's preferred version of Dante's Vergil.

6. Black Christmas (1974)
Bob Clark's slasher model not bad, but hardly underrated.

7. Frailty (2001)
I remember this one as being pretty good, but forget the details.

8. A Tale Of Two Sisters (2003)
Haven't seen, heard good things mostly.

9. StageFright: Aquarius (1987)
Unfamiliar with this one, unless under another less goofy title.

10. Session 9 (2001)
Good try, doesn't hit the mark.

11. Demons (1985)
Haven't been motivated to see it by what I've heard over the years.

12. High Tension (2003)
Disappointingly trite. Well made for what it turns out to be.

13. Monkey Shines (1988)
Misbegotten. A nice episode (or two) of HOW DID THIS GET MADE? recently treating with it.

14. [Rec] (2007)
Been meaning to see it. I gather the US remake is about as weak tea as those tend to be.

15. The Changeling (1980)
Pretty sure I've seen it, but no memory at all of the details.

16. Sleepaway Camp (1983)
Aggressively stupid. Twist ending has croggled 11yos of all ages for decades, but, well, no. Another HOW DID topic a while back, which was definitely more amusing than the film is.

17. Trick ‘r Treat (2007)
Haven't seen.

18. Nightbreed (1990)
I've only seen the studio's initial cut, for theatrical release, which was disappointing (it turns into the War of the Normal-Sized [vs. Colossal] Beasts by the end), but amusing enough...not too underrated.

19. Martyrs (2008)
A brilliant, harrowing and in all ways serious film. I've seen it twice, and that might be enough. I've seen a few minutes of the THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE, to which this film as unlike as one can get and both be "extreme" horror films, and that is more than enough of that excrement. (They were lumped together a bit even as MARTYRS writer/director Pascal Laugier was correctly referring to the likes of SAW and CENTIPEDE as irresponsible and artistically bankrupt.)

Imagine something like SALO filmed with restraint and conceived with far less contempt for the entirety of humanity, and you have some sense of it.

Or, even, Virgil. How many have you seen, Bill?

mybillcrider said...

I'm impressed, Todd. I've seen only two, The Haunting and Jacob's Ladder.

Thanks! i lose points, aside from typoing Virgil's name, for conflating THE ORPANAGE, which I haven't seen yet and probably should, with THE ORPHAN, which is as I describe.

Everything is getting in the way of my getting Tuesday's Overlooked up today, very much including how much interesting material is on the blogs themselves. That last not the worst problem one can have.

I have seen every one. Highly recommend The Haunting, Frailty The Orphanage, Trick R Treat and A Tale of Two Sisters.
Never cared much for Suspiria or Demons.

I hadn't expected anyone to have seen them all.
