You can't go far wrong with 1965, can you, even though they don't have Soupy Sales on their list. Maybe it was just a local NY hit. Anyway, here is the NYC top 10 of 4/28/65:
1 1 MRS. BROWN YOU’VE GOT A LOVELY DAUGHTER - Herman’s Hermits 2 4 TICKET TO RIDE - The Beatles 3 3 THE MOUSE - Soupy Sales 4 2 GO NOW! - The Moody Blues 5 11 I’LL NEVER FIND ANOTHER YOU - The Seekers 6 8 I DO LOVE YOU - Billy Stewart 7 24 LAND OF 1000 DANCES - Cannibal & The Headhunters 8 5 GAME OF LOVE - Wayne Fontana & The Mindbenders 9 10 SILHOUETTES - Herman’s Hermits 10 12 COUNT ME IN - Gary Lewis & The Playboys
Soupy's really hanging in there. And Herman has two in the Top 10. We saw him a few years ago, and his stage show rocks about 100 times harder than you'd think, considering his hits.
The article is on the money about WLS being heard everywhere. In the early 1970s, in coastal Georgia, I'd listen to WLS all night. I still remember Larry Lujack and the Farm Report and PSAs about taking off your tires' snow chains.
Of course we had our own 50,000 watt station in WABC, which you could hear down to Florida, though I preferred WMCA. Sometimes at night I'd get CKLW from Detroit. I remember that is where I first heard "(Just Like) Romeo and Juliet" by The Reflections.
The other station we listened to at night was WNOE in New Orleans. That was a great station. And of course WLAC in Nashville, another Hall of Famer if there ever was one.

"I said, ah, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na."
Cannibal & the Headhunters is definitely one of the great band names.
Also, the Supremes' "Back in My Arms Again" jumped from Sure Shot to #11.

Judy and I listened to it at night on dates in the car in the early '60s. Dick Biondi is the DJ I remember most.
