For me this was in the "misheard lyrics" category. I used to think he was saying "Give me the Beach Boys and free my soul..." which didn't make a lot of sense, admittedly, but that's how I heard it.
In the late 80s Grey re recorded his hits and sold them on tv. When you called to answer he answered the phone. At least he did the night I called. We talked for probably fifteen minutes. I got to tell him what a great voice and songwriter he was. He should have had much better luck. I believe his last album was country. He did a damned good job with it.
