Amusing that this ATLANTIC editor has chosen to take a children's story from the author of short actually entitled "The Finest Story in the World"...I certainly recall reading James Blish citing the James Joyce story "The Dead" as his nominee. Could you begin to cite a best single short, Bill?
Hemingway's ultra-short story, consisting of six words: "For sale: baby shoes. Never worn." When I told that to one of my daughters, she started crying.

I could cite favorites but not the best. "The Dead" is a wonderful story, but it's not short.
