Don Zimmer, R. I. P.

NY Daily News: Baseball is forever poorer with the passing of Don Zimmer, one of the game’s all-time good will ambassadors, humorists and raconteurs who began his travelogue career as a Dodger in Brooklyn, surviving two near-fatal beanings, and went on to be an original ’62 Met, a Washington Senator, manager of two storied franchises, the Red Sox and Cubs, and finally Joe Torre’s bench coach for four Yankee world championship teams.

Sad news. He was always good for a funny quote--intentional or otherwise.

I remember him as a player. I even have some of those old baseball cards with his picture on them.

RIP, Popeye.

Bummer. He was a real character. I remember when the odious Pedro Martinez threw him to the ground at the height of the Yankees-Red Sox feud.

RIP

The night after he was struck in the face by a ball fouled into the Yankees’ dugout by Chuck Knoblauch during a 1999 playoff game, he wore an Army helmet. He allowed Derek Jeter to rub his head and his stomach for good luck before he came to the plate.
