Luckily, as a kid when I'd talk to other children or talk about shows it was the character we'd mention - usually Snoopy, Charlie Brown and so on in the case of the Schulz strips.
Though I did read a biography or two and Schulz did indeed state he never cared for the choice of name PEANUTS and it just became too popular a strip to later change it anew.
