Thelma Z. Lavine, the FROM SOCRATES TO SARTRE author/tv presenter and one of the more famous profs I had, was quite certain in 1987 that the Beatles were still the product of a cunningly successful hype campaign. Well, there was one around them, but oddly enough they weren't the Knack. Nor even Pat Boone. And boy did the Rolling Stones follow them around. The Kinks knew better, but that didn't help as much.
