Oddly I just read THE GIVER. Seems to me adults would like it more than YAs since there is no romance, no cool clothes, nothing much but a philosophical debate. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
I've read quite a few - though I've read a lot of Westerfeld's books I missed SO YESTERDAY, however - but the series I'd definitely add is Australian: John Marsden's Tomorrow Series beginning with TOMORROW, WHEN THE WAR BEGAN (which has been filmed).
Most of the ones I haven't read are in the fantasy end of the list.
