Here's another one, a little less dramatic. In the late 80s, Thompson came to speak at my college in tiny Lexington, Virginia. He had alreday had a few drinks by the time he was chauffered from his hotel to the college gym by a student, who, once they'd arrived, went inside to see if everything was ready.
When he came out he saw his car hauling ass around the nearest corner.
So the student and an administrator found another car and gave chase, eventually cornering him and getting him back to give his speech. Thompson proceeded to drink throughout it.
The article in the school newspaper about the evenet began with the line, "Crown Royal can really mess you up."
The other great college story (which, sadly, was before my time) was about Bill Clinton hitting on all the coeds at a visit in 1984. As Criswell says, can you prove it didn't happen?
I find both the Thompson and Clinton stories believable. But, despite their demons, Thompson was a great writer and Clinton is still a great politician.
