Usually, but not always, high-paid coaches at least help deliver winning games. In any case their record of delivering the goods is usually much better than other high-paid state employees, though much less than conscientious, low-paid bureaucratic grunts !

The publicist at one school where I taught told me that when I could field a verb-conjugating team what would draw a paying crowd of thousands, the college would pay me as much as the coach was getting.

I suspect the coach here is the University of Washington Huskies' skipper. Last year they were 7-5 and lost their podunk, self-esteem bowl.
