I remember reading about them in Anthony Boucher's 1943 anthology A POCKET BOOK OF TRUE CRIME -- can't remember the title of the article or the author.Manly Wade Wellman fictionalized them in his novel NOT AT THESE HANDS (1963).
Yeah, COTTONWOOD is a good novel
