I wasn't a subscriber, but I bought that first issue of PEOPLE off those wooden magazine racks at Fultz News Agency in Denton. I'm not sure, but that may have the last issue of PEOPLE I bought, as well.
James, the Fultz News Agency was a wonderful place. I went in there at least once a week to buy paperbacks. It's the only place I remember that didn't rip off the covers of the paperbacks and send them back. They kept some intact for sale in the back of the place. I thought that was great.
Yep, I bought many older paperbacks off those wire racks in the back of the store. I was in there at least once a week during the years I went to college in Denton.
WIRED always was a bit of a disappointment...as MENTAL FLOSS has been. I recently saw a 1970s PEOPLE cover which highlighted the (free jazz pianist) Keith Jarrett profile within, which said to me Here's a magazine that hasn't found its footing (in the muck) yet.
Yes, Bill, you were begging for jokes about HARPER'S WEEKLY and THE ATLANTIC MONTHLY...

Well, it was SI. My parents gave it to me for my birthday.

Well, I knew it wasn't Time or Newsweek...

I was a charter subscriber to WIRED, but dropped it after three years, though I picked up issues now and then.
